Welcome to our mid-January eNewsletter. Here in New Hampshire we have an early January thaw and when you are reading this I will be attending the 92nd annual Transportation Research Board meeting in Washington, DC. With over 11,000 expected to attend, and 2500 papers this is the most important transportation conference of the year.
I am giving a presentation on the need for a universal transportation data model. As any good GIS professional will tell you, in the end it's all about data, and if you want to efficiently and effectively manage data you need everyone to be working with the same data model. This becomes particularly important when states begin to collect 3D asset data as they did recently in Utah. I will post a link to the presentation in the next eNewsletter.
Remember you can choose to receive either a digital or hard copy of LiDAR Magazine on our website. Please encourage your colleagues to sign up for this eNewsletter HERE. We thank you for your ongoing support in building this professional community.

Point Clouds from Images
LP360 is a family of tools for exploiting point clouds. The fundamental difference between an image and a point cloud is that the point cloud is a three dimensional representation of an environment whereas an image is a two dimensional representation (or, at best, a "two and a half" dimensional representation). A second major difference is that images are most typically represented using a uniform grid structure ...

2013 Predictions - One Point of View: John Russo AIA – I think you will find a very thought provoking set of ideas. 1) Interior mobile continues to gain traction, but the cost will need to match that of a static scanner before it is adopted in any significant numbers. The market simply won't bear the cost of $100k+ scanners - even for mobile. 2) Software as a Service, SaaS ...

Processing and Communicating - Internally: Stephen Clancy – There are countless articles on Mobile LiDAR addressing a variety of topics. As an industry, we do an effective job of communicating to our peers and perspective clients the projects we’ve performed, the accuracies we’ve achieved, or the unique solutions we offer, among other topics. However, aside from the ...
