Welcome to our mid-January issue of LiDAR News. As a New Hampshire resident I have been immersed in politics for the past few months. Now that the primary is over we can get things back to normal, except for the lack of snow. What a crazy winter - still riding my road bike every day.
The focus for this issue is on ILMF 2012 for two reasons. First it is the kickoff of a very busy 6 months, starting in Denver with ILMF, then Florida in February for the Faro and Riegl user conferences - both new events, ASPRS in California in March, SPAR in Houston in April and the Hexagon User Conference in Las Vegas in June. I am getting jet lag just thinking about it. Rest assured though, LiDAR News will be at all of these events working hard to keep you informed.
The second reason for the focus on ILMF 2012 is that we will be distributing our LiDAR Magazine in print at this conference. Thanks to the support of our growing community of readers and sponsors we have been able to offer a print edition after just 2 issues. The digital version will also be available. These are destined to become collector items so be sure to see us in Denver January 23-25. We will send a subscription invite out to all LiDAR news readers shortly.
The Featured Video in this issue comes from Makai Ocean Engineering. They are demonstrating their Makai Voyager software designed to support visualization of large LiDAR data sets.
CyArk gets the Spotlight this time for the important work they are doing with the Hopi Petroglyph sites near the Grand Canyon. It's great to be reminded of the benefits that this technology can create for people and culture.
If you have ever wondered about the sensitivity of identifying the exact target center during registration then you need to read Michael Olsen's student research article, Picking the Right Point. And if you need help growing your business Joe Croser, who helped Pointools to make a deal with Bentley Systems, has a new consultancy that you will want to learn more about.
Michael Raphael wraps it up with another impressive recount of the innovative 3D services that Direct Dimensions provided on the virtual restoration of an ancient Roman sculpture.
We are approaching 250 listings in the Resource Directory. Please take advantage of this opportunity to promote your firm to readers and organizations around the world: list your firm. And don't forget to send us your white papers and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.
It is going to be an exciting year in many respects. Please let us know how LiDAR News can create more value for you, and encourage your colleagues to sign up for the newsletter here. We thank you for ongoing support in building this professional community.

Using 3D technologies to Preserve Hopi Petroglyph Sites
CyArk recently launched a new project on our website, the Hopi Petroglyph sites of Tutuveni and Dawa Park. This is a particularly interesting project as the 3D scans are being utilized as a point in time record of the site and allowing a new generation of Native American youth to learn about and share the legacy of their ancestors. This has been an incredibly rewarding project for CyArk and we wanted to share it with a wider community ...

Picking the Right Point: Michael Olsen – In our 3D laser scanning class at Oregon State University this fall, we spent a lot of time discussing various scan alignment methodologies, techniques, and strategies. Slight deviations in computing scan transformation parameters can have significant influence on scan accuracy, particularly in long range scanning. One of the first ...

Introducing OundleGroup: Joe Croser – For the last few years I have been completely immersed in the world of 3D laser scanning and point cloud data reuse. I have lived it as a large software licensee, breathed it as an early-stage disruptive software vendor, I’ve talked about it here on LiDAR News, and I’ve watched it go main-stream – very quickly. It all started back in 2009 ...
