The Survey Summit and Esri User Conference are next on the industry agenda. The Summit starts on July 21 and continues through the 24th, which overlaps with the start of the UC on Monday the 23rd in beautiful San Diego, California. Esri has been promoting their native support for LiDAR in ArcGIS 10.1 so I would expect to see a number of impressive 3D GIS applications.
I want to welcome Nadia Anis to our team of contributors. Nadia is an architect who, as you will learn has fully embraced laser scanning in her practice. It's really a matter of documenting the as-found conditions before making any changes that creates significant value. Think of it as an insurance policy.
If you have an idea for an article please let me know, and encourage your colleagues to sign up for this newsletter HERE. We thank you for ongoing support in building this professional community.

The AutoCAD Point Cloud Tool Set
As the Operations Manager of a 3d imaging service provider (Precision 3d Scanning), a large amount of my time is spent figuring out the most efficient and effective deliverable for my clients. Most of the time there's some level of a point cloud/model hybrid that fits the mold. Too often I find a technically advanced client who would love to use point clouds, but can’t get the signoff for plug-in software that would enable usability in their ...

The Smart Start For Redesign: Nadia Anis – Architects, like me, who work on existing buildings, spend months and probably years of their professional life trying to capture the existing conditions prior to starting their new projects. Now with the advent of laser scanning which can provide us with accurate documentation in a fraction of the time, the question is no longer ...

Mobile LiDAR Point Density – Part 1: Stephen Clancy – LiDAR resolution, not to be confused with accuracy, provides the framework for identifying and discerning objects. Similar to aerial photography, higher resolution LiDAR information affords the opportunity to accurately identify smaller features. In LiDAR vernacular, there are two closely coupled terms that relate to ...

Seeing a Point Cloud for the First Time: Michael Olsen – Do you remember the excitement you felt when you saw a point cloud for the first time? How you felt? The ideas that rushed into your head on what it could be used for?
Sometimes, I think some of us get so involved working with LIDAR data that we forget how much of a privilege it is and that it is a very small community ...
