I am in the process of slowly returning from an ASCE—American Society of Civil Engineers—day-long introductory seminar on laser scanning and LiDAR: stuck on the tarmac for 4 hours. There were about 15 people at the seminar who were just getting interested in the technology. Most people were involved with surveying in one form or another.
I still believe we are just 2 years into the 3D decade. Those of us who are immersed in the industry don't realize how little the technology has penetrated into the mainstream. There certainly is a long runway ahead of us, but as Chris Zmijewski—a new contributing author—points out, attracting the younger generation to our 3D profession is not going all that well.
If you have an idea for an article please let me know, and encourage your colleagues to sign up for this newsletter HERE. We thank you for ongoing support in building this professional community.

Career Paths
I will never forget the day that I was working on a rather prestigious assignment in Washington DC. It was one of those moments where you suddenly realize where you are, standing in a location that so very few people have had the privilege to be. You can’t help it, your mind begins to drift and visualize the past; all of the amazing people and historic decisions and events that had taken place where I was standing and working. A period ...

Laser Scanning the Envelope
: Ken Smerz - Laser scanning has its obvious uses in the BIM world, specifically within the mechanical, plumbing and HVAC trades. Anyone currently competing in this space and not using laser scanning and 3D modeling is missing not only a significant cost saving tool, but not looking to the future where soon all MEP as-found documentation work will be done this way ...
