As I mentioned in the previous issue of LiDAR News I am really looking forward to attending Hexagon 2012 next week (June 4 - 7) in Las Vegas, Nevada. I am hoping to see and hear about the progress being made with the integration of Intergraph and Leica GeoSystems. Since last year's event Hexagon has acquired MicroSurvey and just last week myVR, a virtual reality software firm based in Norway.
In a recent blog I stirred things up a bit by raising the issue of software lagging hardware in terms of innovation in the laser scanning industry. For me, it goes to the critically important question of what "could be" accomplished versus what is being done. This is a real challenge in large firms. The cards are somewhat stacked against innovation unless people are allowed to fail, and in this world economy there is not much room for that. I'll be blogging and tweeting what I see and hear at Hexagon 2012 - stay tuned.

LIDAR Best Practices: Part V – Intermediate Surface Classification
In the previous installment, we examined the process of the first step of automatic LIDAR data classification. Recall that LIDAR point data in LAS format contains an attribute called "Class." This attribute is used to designate the object from which the point (a laser return or "echo") reflected. All points are assigned a value of "Created, Never Classified" (class == 0) or ...

Working the Graveyard Shift – Literally : John Russo – It sounded like an interesting job. After all, how many chances do you get to go inside a fully operational coroner’s office? What would it be like? Will I see real dead people? And, for a coroner’s office, this one is actually somewhat famous since many of its clients are celebrities. It even has its own gift store called ...
