Welcome to the mid-December issue of LiDAR News. Before we dive in, the LiDAR News Team wants to wish everyone a fun, healthy and relaxing Holiday season. This is your last chance to submit your suggestions for the BIG laser scanning/LiDAR news stories of 2011 for the next LiDAR Magazine. We don't want anyone to be left out.
On Sunday December 4th, which is normally the slowest day of the week for the LiDAR News blog, the traffic went so high I thought the blog had been hacked. Turns out I had a blog post from earlier in the year on the Lockheed Martin RQ - 170 Sentinel stealth drone. This is the drone that was believed to have been involved in the capture of Osama Bin Laden and that was rumored to have been captured by Iran that weekend.
As I write this I just saw the video of the drone on display in Iran along with a report that President Obama had turned down a number of plans to recover and/or destroy the RQ-170. From what I have read most people do not think that the RQ-170 carries a LiDAR sensor, but the drone does represent some of our most sophisticated technology.
The Featured Video in this issue comes from CSIRO, an Australian research agency that has developed a handheld, indoor mobile mapping product concept that is truly innovative. Don't miss this. The Spotlight in this issue goes to guest author Chris Hopkinson on the unexpected changes taking place in Canada with the very successful, now defunct C-CLEAR program.
Richard Rybka showcases the use of mobile scanning on 2 projects in Europe. Michael Gerlek supplies his valuable update on open source software and data. And Michael Raphael (who came through for me at the last minute - thanks Michael) discusses the use of short range laser scanning to reverse engineer a snowmobile engine. This guy can do it all.
