Welcome to the second issue of LiDAR News for the month of January 2011. Thanks for your kind words of encouragement, and telling your colleagues about our new website. We are in the "dead of winter" here in New Hampshire with the snow piling up and the extreme cold moving in, but the skiing is much better and the days are getting longer. When does that ground hog show up?
As some of you know I have been working with a great group of volunteers to develop a terrestrial laser scanning data exchange standard and format. This is part of the ASTM International E57 3D Imaging committee work. I am pleased to report that the standard has been approved by the membership and we will soon have a published document. I will provide more information on this in a future newsletter.
In the meantime I ask that you make it a point to request that your hardware and software vendors make a commitment to implementing the ASTM E57.04 standard in 2011. This will only become an industry standard if end users and customers demand it. Everyone says this is very important in concept, but as we all know, money talks. We need the vendors to invest in the implementation of the standard. Please encourage them to make this a top priority for 2011.
As a service to our readers and the vendors who support our site we would like to encourage you to provide your marketing press releases, white papers, articles and educational videos. Please send these to the email address at the end of this section. We are already seeing excellent traffic with the videos we have posted—yours can be next.
Including the Spotlight, we have 5 new articles in this issue. In the first, Richard Rybka provides a number of examples where mobile mapping is opening up new opportunities in construction and site work. Lewis Graham continues to explain how LiDAR is becoming the go-to technology in the power industry. John Russo begins to shed some light on the challenges of working in a BIM software environment that wants all of the floors to be level and the walls to be perfectly flat versus the objects derived from the as-found point cloud. David Ward explains how the combination of LiDAR and IFSAR can result in a cost effective digital terrain model that can cover wide areas and provide a high level of detail where needed. How's that for a wide range of articles?
In the Spotlight for this issue is an article by Michael Olsen, Associate Professor at Oregon State University. Michael provides us with a thought provoking look into the college classroom and encourages us to seek diversity of opinion by asking others how they would solve a specific problem. Having spent 3 years as an Instructor at UNH this article brings back a lot of memories.
