Welcome to the early October issue of LiDAR News. The recent Digital Documentation 2011 event in Glasgow, Scotland was a very informative and fun conference. Digital documentation for historic preservation is different than other applications of laser scanning. It's not about 3D geometry; it's about preserving cultural heritage. The other upcoming European conferences this fall include Spar Europe and ELMF.
The second edition of our digital LiDAR Magazine is scheduled to go out next week. I have space for a couple more articles in our end of the year edition. If you have an interesting story that you want to promote in this exciting format please let me know.
The featured video in this issue comes from a group of researchers at Idaho State University who provide an excellent introduction to the use of LiDAR for hydrological studies.
The Spotlight in this issue goes to Fred Persi for his thought provoking "wish list" of improvements to the field of 3D imaging. These are well thought out requests from a seasoned pro that I hope the vendors take a look at. It would mean productivity gains for all of us.
As Richard Rybka points out in his article on mobile data collection guidelines, it is going to be very interesting to see how the recently awarded TRB project to develop Mobile LiDAR guidelines for use in transportation applications plays out. As a member of the research team I will do my best to keep you informed.
Lewis Graham provides the second article in his series on LiDAR best practices. This one is focused on field data collection and is a must read.
Mike Neuman, from Mandli Communication wraps it up this time with a different twist on the use of Mobile LiDAR. In this case the data is being used with a driving simulator that is located at the Wisconsin Traffic Operations and Safety lab.
The Resource Directory listings are expanding. Take a few minutes to list your firm in our Resource Directory, and don't forget to send us your white papers and product videos as well. We want to help you to be noticed.
Please let me know how we can be of service to you, and also please encourage your colleagues to sign up for the newsletter here.

Gazing Into the Future
Several months ago I suggested a column on possible future technical innovations in laser mapping. As we all know, predicting the future is not so easy, but it’s fun to think about and helps shake out the cobwebs of the daily grind. So in no particular order, here are the top five advancements that I’d like to see in the not-so-distant future: One-pass color. It almost goes without saying that we can expect future generations of technology ...

Mobile Mapping Data Collection Guidelines: Richard Rybka – New emerging technologies often take their respective markets by surprise. A web search for "mobile mapping data collection guidelines" yields only one document that specifically targets this subject. Users and manufacturers are in the process of introducing a better way to collect data. As a result, the formulation ...

LIDAR Best Practices: Part II – Field Analysis: Lewis Graham – In the initial installment, we examined the initial acquisition segment of an airborne LIDAR project. In this issue, we will move on through field quality checks. As discussed in the previous issue, it is always best practice to look for problems that might require a reflight prior to mobilization off the project area ...

 | Sponsored by Topcon Topcon's IP-S2 Mobile Mapping System overcomes the challenges of mapping 3D features at a high level of accuracy. Accurate vehicle positions are obtained using three technologies: a dual frequency GNSS receiver establishes a geospatial position; an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) provides vehicle attitude; and connection to the vehicle CAN bus or external wheel encoders obtains odometry information.
