Welcome to the first edition of LiDAR News for 2011. Happy New Year from the team at Spatial Media! Because construction spending was up in December in the US for the third month in a row, it appears as though we finished 2010 with increasing momentum in the economy. I encourage all of you to focus on thinking positive and doing what we can to make things happen in our own locales. Many of the people that I speak to in the laser scanning and LiDAR markets had a very good 2010, and expect 2011 to bring even more improvement.
We are all very excited about the launch of the eNewsletter, the new website and the prospects for the coming year for LiDAR News. Our success is directly related to our ability to provide our readers with quality original content. We are going to work very hard at providing this. I would like to encourage all of you to provide us with any leads or information that you have which you think would be of value to the industry. This can be viral marketing at its best.
We have 6 new authors for you in this issue. Rob Mellis with Bechtel is an experienced land surveyor who has worked for the Florida DOT and has been involved with CADD for 20+ years. Stephen Clancy is a technical expert in mobile mapping with Michael Baker. Jarlath O’Neil-Dunne, from the University of Vermont, is heavily involved with LIDAR data processing of urban environments. Lewis Graham, President and CTO at GeoCue, was involved with the creation of the LAS data format and is one of the most experienced kinematic laser scanning experts in the world. Michael Raphael, the founder of Direct Dimensions has a background in metrology, but with more than 15 years in laser scanning, he has one of the most diverse laser scanning companies in the business. You name it—he has scanned it.
In the Spotlight for this issue is Doug Pritchard with his detailed article on scanning the historic Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland. Doug was in charge of the highly successful project this past Spring to scan Mt. Rushmore. He is an internationally recognized expert in digital historic preservation.
Thanks for your encouragement and ongoing support. With your interest, the team looks forward to an exciting, educational and successful year. Please help us to get the word out.

The Onsite Terrestrial Scanning of Rosslyn Chapel
Rosslyn Chapel is a 15th century medieval stone chapel located in Roslin, Midlothian Scotland. It is internationally renowned for its mixture of ornate pagan and Christian sculpture as well as its links with the Knights Templar, Freemasons and more recently the Holy Grail. Since the 15th century the building has survived vandalism and neglect during the Reformation, having been used as a horse stable by Cromwell’s troops during the English Civil War ...

Mobile LiDAR & GIS: Background of a Service Provider: Stephen Clancy – Last April, I had the pleasure of presenting Mobile LiDAR at the American Congress on Surveying & Mapping Annual Conference in Phoenix. The first question I received from an audience member after my presentation, took me by surprise - What makes you qualified to present this? To be honest, I ...

Capitalizing on Local Government’s Investment in LiDAR : Jarlath O'Neil-Dunne – In the movie “Field of Dreams” an Iowa farmer (played by Kevin Costner) sees a vision of a baseball field and hears a voice whisper, “If you build it, he will come.” His neighbors think he is crazy when he decides to plow over his corn field and replace it with a baseball diamond. To some extent ...

High Voltage Transmission Lines an Area of Opportunity for LiDAR : Lewis Graham – Greetings from Huntsville, Alabama! I am excited to have been offered the opportunity to contribute to LIDAR News. First off, a few caveats. My companies (GeoCue Corporation and QCoherent Software, LLC) offer software and services in the kinematic laser scanning arena to both ...

Is Technology Holding Back LiDAR, or Is It People?: Rob Mellis – Maybe it’s because I’ve spent the last 30 years or so working as a surveyor, or because I’ve spent the last 18 years instructing people in the use of CADD and civil software, to me the biggest issue I see with the expanded use of LiDAR is not the hardware or software, but the issue of the paradigm shift for the ...

 | Sponsored by Topcon Topcon's IP-S2 Mobile Mapping System overcomes the challenges of mapping 3D features at a high level of accuracy. Accurate vehicle positions are obtained using three technologies: a dual frequency GNSS receiver establishes a geospatial position; an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) provides vehicle attitude; and connection to the vehicle CAN bus or external wheel encoders obtains odometry information.
