Mine Surveys in Less Than Half the Time with Maptek Mobile Scanning Print E-mail
Written by Maptek

Experience proves that mobile scanning takes half the time of laser scanning using tripod setup. This is on top of the 8-10 times improvement that laser scanning already delivers over traditional survey methods, according to 3D laser scanner developer Maptek.

Maptek will visit mining regions in North America between April and July to demonstrate how sites can use mobile scanning to collect accurate survey data in a safer, faster, and easier way than ever before.

‘We have hard evidence showing that laser scanning is a viable alternative to aerial mapping, which also requires additional time and effort for 3rd party processing,’ said Maptek General Manager, North America, Jon Larson.

The Maptek I-Site 8800 long range laser scanner has been set up with a ruggedised vehicle mount on a light duty truck. The scanner is operated from within the cab, allowing normally inaccessible areas to be captured without risk to personnel.

While on site, Maptek staff will do the surveying, process the data, and demonstrate the workflow and results to operations.

‘The benefit of running the scanning system at a site is that surveyors get a very clear demonstration of the speed and ease of collecting data,’ Larson added. ‘The system improves safety by allowing personnel to operate the scanner from inside a vehicle.’

‘We work up the data for them on the spot. They get access to up-to-date surface models on the same day as the surveying. Mine planners and management can be certain they are all working off the latest pit status,’ he concluded.

Maptek’s latest hardware, the I-Site 8800 laser scanner has a data capture range of up to 2000 metres.
